THE HOLOCAUST
The Second World War began on September 1st, 1939, with the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, however unrest had been brewing since the end of the First World War twenty years earlier. Hitler came to power in 1933, and his charisma caught the German people in his web of malignant vindictiveness. He wanted Germany to shrug off its disgrace from WWI, and build a perfect, 'pure' nation. This is what caused the great destruction of the Holocaust. The word 'holocaust' is used to describe the attempted genocide of the European Jews. It comes from the Greek word holokauston, which was a sacrificial offering to God. Holos means completely, and kaustos means burnt.
The Holocaust resulted in the death of over 6 million Jews, 1.5 million of which were only children. Adolf Hitler's rule resulted in the decimation of the Jewish population, and the disgrace of Germany. Hitler's discrimination swept an entire nation into a prejudiced and hateful mindset.
